{"id":1460,"date":"2015-03-18T14:44:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-18T14:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/?p=1460"},"modified":"2015-03-18T21:15:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-18T21:15:47","slug":"how-to-watch-the-eclipse-on-the-side-of-your-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/2015\/03\/how-to-watch-the-eclipse-on-the-side-of-your-car\/","title":{"rendered":"How to watch the eclipse on the side of your car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There will be a solar eclipse visible in the UK on Friday (20 March), peaking at around 09:30-09:45 in the morning, depending on where you are.\u00a0 This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-31921098\" target=\"_blank\">BBC News article<\/a> describes when and where it will be visible.\u00a0 It also links to the Royal Astronomical Society webpage, which has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ras.org.uk\/images\/solar_eclipse_leaflet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">How to Observe an Eclipse Safely<\/a> guide.\u00a0 The secret is not to look at the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>This post describes a method that is a cross between the RSA&#8217;s pinhole and binocular methods.\u00a0 We used it to watch an eclipse when we were doing geological fieldwork Tenerife in September 2005.<\/p>\n<h3>Project the eclipse onto the side of your car<\/h3>\n<h4>You will need<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>A piece of card or paper (to create a shadow)<\/li>\n<li>Binoculars (to magnify and focus the image)<\/li>\n<li>A car, or similar smooth surface (to project the image onto)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_1461\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1461\" class=\"wp-image-1461 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/PA030014-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/PA030014-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/PA030014-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rodrigo del Potro projecting an eclipse onto a car.
