of reliable information about large Icelandic fissure eruptions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t you hate it when you see the film of a book that you enjoyed and they have missed out lots of the best bits?\u00a0 Or even worse, the director has made changes to the original story for &#8216;artistic&#8217; reasons?\u00a0 Well, that&#8217;s how I feel about the news coverage today about a report into the threat to the UK from big lava eruptions in Iceland.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/laki_news.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1202\" alt=\"laki_news\" src=\"http:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/laki_news.png\" width=\"532\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/laki_news.png 886w, https:\/\/all-geo.org\/volcan01010\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/laki_news-300x259.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/><\/a>What&#8217;s the story?<\/h3>\n<p>Claire Witham of the Met Office, is giving <a href=\"http:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EGU2014\/EGU2014-11471.pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\">a presentation<\/a> at the European Geosciences Union conference in Vienna this week about impact on the UK of such an eruption.\u00a0 It&#8217;s serious stuff.\u00a0 Last October, the British Geological Survey released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/research\/volcanoes\/LakiEruptionScenarioPlanning.html\" target=\"_blank\">a report<\/a> (compiled by Sue Loughlin, Head of Volcanology) that describes what we know about such eruptions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The 1783-84 Laki event erupted over 14 km<sup>3<\/sup> of basalt lava, releasing millions of tonnes of sulphur dioxide gas that polluted the atmosphere across northwest Europe for months with sulphuric acid fog.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s estimated that it killed over 20,000 people in Europe at the time, and new studies suggest that if it happened again today that figure could be 140,000.\u00a0 Furthermore, the acid damages crops and can poison waterways.<\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;ve had two Laki-sized eruptions in the past 1,000 years (Laki 1783, Eldgj\u00e1 934), and eleven smaller ones (but only two of these erupted &gt;1 km<sup>3<\/sup> magma), so another such eruption is possible in our lifetimes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nevertheless, the reality wasn&#8217;t exciting enough for the mainstream media, who have reported this as some kind of imminent apocalypse.\u00a0 In lots of science communication, there is a problem with dumbing-down of information.\u00a0 In volcanology, the problem is sexing up.<\/p>\n<h3>Media changes to the story for &#8216;artistic reasons&#8217;<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>A number of reports introduced a new character, the <strong>supervolcano<\/strong>.\u00a0 The term doesn&#8217;t appear anywhere in the original report.\u00a0 In fact, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/10\/the-rise-of-supervolcano\/\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Klemetti described<\/a>, it doesn&#8217;t appear very often in any real scientific papers.\u00a0 And when it does, it&#8217;s mainly to do with explosive eruptions of over 1000 km<sup>3<\/sup> of <em>pumice and ash<\/em>.\u00a0 Laki produced 14 km<sup>3<\/sup> of <em>lava<\/em>, so wouldn&#8217;t even come close!<\/li>\n<li>Another favourite baddie, <strong>climate change<\/strong>, also gets a role in the media story.\u00a0 The summer of 1783 was unusually hot in Europe, and the winter of 1783-84 was very cold across the whole northern hemisphere.\u00a0 Scientists at the time suggested that there might be a connection, but more recent work shows that (surprise, surprise) things are a bit more complicated than that.\u00a0 The BGS report itself says that it is not possible to prove that the extreme weather was linked to the eruption.<\/li>\n<li>No self-respecting blockbuster is complete without a <strong>massive body count<\/strong>.\u00a0 So even though the report states that the eruption killed 60% of Icelandic livestock, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/supervolcanoes-spewing-deadly-gases-are-greatest-hazard-uk-1446315\" target=\"_blank\">International Business Times<\/a> inflates that figure to 80%.\u00a0 Even better, the Daily Star posted their report under the headline: TOXIC SMOG FROM ICELANDIC VOLCANO COULD KILL MILLIONS.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, no story about a hypothetical future risk gets as many clicks as one with <strong>immediate danger<\/strong>.\u00a0 Hence the the Daily Star opening with the words <em>&#8220;Ministers are on red alert&#8230;&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 This is the same reason that the Mail Online recently converted an Icelandic volcanologist&#8217;s gentle reminder that Hekla is still an active volcano (and you should think twice about climbing it) into <em>&#8220;major eruption could happen within days and hit air travel&#8221;<\/em>.\u00a0 That was on the 19 March, and still nothing has happened.\u00a0 The BGS report says that, on average, we can expect a fissure eruption of &gt;1 km<sup>3<\/sup> lava once every 270 years or so.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Sources of good information about large-magnitude fissure eruptions in Iceland.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The best information comes straight from the horse&#8217;s mouth.\u00a0 You can read the full report into large an executive summary that you can download <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgs.ac.uk\/downloads\/start.cfm?id=2882\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 It contains all the great stuff that was left out of the news reports, such as descriptions of the impacts at the time and of Icelandic fissure eruptions in general.<\/li>\n<li>The Cabinet Office National Risk Register of Civil Emergencies, which now contains a Laki-type event, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/211867\/NationalRiskRegister2013_amended.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/climateandgeohazards.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/05\/guest-blog-man-made-vs-volcanic-air-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\">great blog post<\/a>
