Watershed Lab Group Values

  1. We are respectful and supportive of each person’s identities, experiences, and needs.
  1. We work hard, but we also take adequate time to take care of our physical and mental health and to enjoy our lives outside of work.
  1. We practice safe habits in the field, in the lab, and in transit. We undertake all required safety training before using laboratory facilities. We make a safety plan, communicate our location and expected return time, and carry a first aid kit each time we are in the field. We practice safe driving, water safety, and awareness of our surroundings at all professional events.
  1. We conduct our science in a defensible, reproducible, and ethical manner and we document our methods and results carefully. We back up our field and lab notes, data files, photographs, and writing in multiple physical and electronic places. We practice version control and keep organized metadata (including logs of processing steps). We recognize that our data belongs to Dr. Jefferson and/or our project’s funder, except as otherwise specified.
  1. We come prepared to group and individual meetings, to the field, and the lab. That means that we’ve done the readings, sent an agenda if we’ve called a meeting, procured proper equipment, reviewed protocols, etc.
  1. We practice good lab and equipment citizenship. We keep the lab environment safe and clean (including washing dishes and notifying Dr. Jefferson of safety issues). We check out lab and field equipment, communicate any needed repairs or losses, and we return equipment clean and promptly.
  1. We practice good group citizenship. If a lab mate needs help in the field or lab, we endeavor to help them within reasonable bounds. If we ask our lab mates for help, we are respectful of their time and aim to be as prepared and efficient as possible. We provide each other with constructive feedback and suggestions on presentations, writing, and scientific questions. We develop well-documented protocols that can be shared with other group members.
  1. We keep our professional goals, and those of the group, in mind as we make decisions about to allocate our time, energy, and resources.
