{"id":6271,"date":"2011-06-10T17:42:49","date_gmt":"2011-06-10T22:42:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/?p=6271"},"modified":"2011-06-10T17:42:49","modified_gmt":"2011-06-10T22:42:49","slug":"portolan-maps-the-medieval-gps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/2011\/06\/portolan-maps-the-medieval-gps\/","title":{"rendered":"Portolan Maps: the medieval GPS?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"float: left; padding: 5px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/chrisicon2.jpg\" width=\"49\" height=\"50\" alt=\"A post by Chris Rowan\"\/><\/span>There was a fascinating tidbit in one of the opening chapters of <a href=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/2011\/06\/why-does-a-compass-point-north-a-mystery-at-the-heart-of-the-story-of-science-book-review\/\">North Pole, South Pole<\/a> that appealed to my  <a href=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/2008\/06\/the-geological-map-is-a-work-of-art-in-itself\/\">inner map junkie<\/a>. Source: Digitial Scriptorium<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It turns out the the sources of the radiating lines correspond to major seaports, and the lines themselves record the magnetic compass bearing to other ports in the region. Thus, to get from one port to another, all a navigator had to do was get the bearing off one of these &#8216;portolan&#8217; (or &#8216;harbour finding&#8217;) maps and set a course along it. Pretty clever.<\/p>\n<p>The disadvantage of this method, of course, is that you&#8217;re following a route without really knowing where you&#8217;re going, just as many people nowadays blindly follow the instructions of their GPS navigation software &#8211; sometimes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountaingazette.com\/mountain-notebook\/lost-gps-drivers-alarmed-and-dangerous\/\">into a teensy bit of trouble<\/a>. However, given that this was centuries before a reliable and accurate method of estimating longitude was developed, the coastlines traced out by charts in this time may well have been of questionable accuracy.
