I was running a bit late this week anyway, and then there were 3 magnitude 7s beneath the Philippines to have a look at. Indeed, there has been lots of seismic action in the Papua New Guinea region this week. Focal mechanism indicates N-S compression.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eqinthenews\/2010\/us2010ywbr\/neic_ywbr_cmt.php\">USGS Page<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><span style=\"float: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3867\" title=\"NewBrit200710\" src=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/NewBrit200710.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/NewBrit200710.png 250w, https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/NewBrit200710-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>3. 20th July, Magnitude 6.3; Depth 54 km<\/strong><br \/>\nFocal mechanism indicates N-S convergence<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eqarchives\/gcmt\/neic_yybw_gcmt.php\">USGS Page<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">Given the extremely close proximity of these 3 earthquakes, they could be regarded as a foreshock-main shock-aftershock sequence (although obviously, there are many smaller aftershocks associated with the sequence as well). The latter two earthquakes are consistent with shortening at or near the subduction interface; the first earthquake, though, indicates convergence perpendicular to this. This seems a little odd; the rupture may be deep enough to be in the subducting plate, and appears to show some kind of lateral squashing. However, I actually blogged last September <a href=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/2009\/10\/two-large-earthquakes-two-unusual-focal-mechanisms\/\">about a similar earthquake beneath Indonesia<\/a>, so perhaps it&#8217;s not so unusual in this region after all. <\/p>\n<p>Later in the week, there were also large shocks a few 100km to the east and west of the New Britain sequence. I note these with the usual caveat that while nearby large earthquakes might have given a little nudge to areas that were already on the verge of rupturing, proving any direct connection is exceedingly difficult.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><span style=\"float: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Indonesia210710a.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Indonesia210710a\" width=\"250\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3864\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>4. 21 July, Magnitude 6.1, N of Halmahera, Indonesia; Depth 102 km<\/strong><br \/>\nE-W compression, but with a large strike-slip component. Like the Halmera earthquake, this sequence appears to be linked to the westward subduction of the Philippine plate beneath the Sunda plate, with the earthquakes taking place in a deeply subducted part of the Philippine slab.
