Even if they&#8217;re not all as pretty as <a href=http:\/\/www.unh.edu\/esci\/greatmap.html>the great-grandad of them all<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=http:\/\/shop.bgs.ac.uk\/Bookshop\/product.cfm?id=WS1820><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"smithmap.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/smithmap.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"716\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maps of all scales, from whole countries to a couple of valleys, are available from your friendly, neighbourhood <a href=http:\/\/shop.bgs.ac.uk\/Bookshop\/catalogue.cfm?id=2>geological<\/a> <a href=http:\/\/store.usgs.gov\/b2c_usgs\/b2c\/display\/(xcm=r3standardpitrex_prd&#038;layout=6_1_61_50_2&#038;uiarea=2&#038;ctype=areaDetails&#038;carea=0000000009)\/.do>surveys<\/a>. Whilst providing a geological map of the surrounding area or a favourite hiking spot could be regarded as undue and unnecessary encouragement, it&#8217;s possible that if we already know what&#8217;s up the top of that muddy and precarious hill, we might feel less need to drag everyone else up it so that we can take a look . Well, possibly.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nOf course, I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;m  that I&#8217;m not alone in thinking that <em>all<\/em> maps are pretty cool, even ones where the land is all one colour. I&#8217;m particularly fond of  old, historical ones, be they afflicted with warped geographies and sea monsters, like this world map by <a href=http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham_Ortelius>Ortelius<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=http:\/\/www.zazzle.co.uk\/world_map_by_ortelius_1570_print-228562777241198757><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OrteliusWorldMap.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/OrteliusWorldMap.jpeg\" width=\"500\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>or somewhat more precise attempts, like <a href=http:\/\/www.prints.co.nz\/page\/fine-art\/PROD\/New_Zealand_Map\/8287>James Cook&#8217;s 1770 chart of New Zealand<\/a>, a copy of which is one of my favourite souvenirs from my time there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=http:\/\/www.prints.co.nz\/page\/fine-art\/PROD\/New_Zealand_Map\/8287><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"8287_Captain%20James_Cook_1770_Chart_of_New_Zealand.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/8287_Captain%20James_Cook_1770_Chart_of_New_Zealand.jpg\" width=\"307\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are also <a href=http:\/\/www.old-maps.co.uk\/>old local maps<\/a> which chart the growth of your hometown from farm to village to urban sprawl&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"map%201748%20Morant.png\" src=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/map%201748%20Morant.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maps are cool.
