Or, as our host <a href=http:\/\/magmacumlaude.blogspot.com\/>Tuff Cookie<\/a> puts it:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;How Hollywood manages to screw up, in movie and\/or TV form, the science that it took me multiple years, pints of blood and continuing therapy sessions to learn, and why I can&#8217;t be held legally responsible for my reaction when the students in my intro classes spout it back at me on exams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I remembered another irritating example whilst I was away, which coincidentally also features Pierce Brosnan of <a href=https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/2008\/03\/geologists-in-the-movies-the-myth-of-the-maverick\/>Dante&#8217;s Peak infamy<\/a>, this time busy in his James Bond tuxedo. In the fairly atrocious <a href=http:\/\/uk.imdb.com\/title\/tt0246460\/>Die Another Day<\/a>, he makes the shocking discovery that the main supervillain&#8217;s diamond mine in Iceland is in fact a front for selling conflict diamonds from Africa. Since in reality, diamonds are only brought to the surface in <a href=http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kimberlite>kimberlites<\/a>, which are the result of the deep melting of continental lithosphere, a diamond mine smack bang in the middle of an <em>ocean<\/em> turning out to be a fake would be no surprise to any of the geologists that MI6 didn&#8217;t consult&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you haven&#8217;t already checked it out, the latest Accretionary Wedge went up while I was away, stacked full of entertaining musings from your favorite geobloggers about the role of geology, and geologists, in the entertainment industry.
