{"id":10378,"date":"2022-12-13T11:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T16:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/?p=10378"},"modified":"2024-01-17T11:18:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T16:18:34","slug":"obsessing-over-the-anthropocenes-golden-spike-misses-the-point-of-the-anthropocene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/2022\/12\/obsessing-over-the-anthropocenes-golden-spike-misses-the-point-of-the-anthropocene\/","title":{"rendered":"Obsessing over the Anthropocene&#8217;s &#8220;golden spike&#8221; misses the point of the Anthropocene"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2022-12-12\/anthropocene-epoch-golden-spike-vote\/101711314\">This is a good write-up<\/a> of the latest step in the long and somewhat contentious process of making the Anthropocene &#8220;official&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In the same week as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-11-13\/earths-population-reaches-eight-billion-people\/101643854\">the world&#8217;s population ticked over to 8 billion people<\/a>, the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) began voting on a short list of locations around the world they believe contain evidence showing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.ade2310\">when the Anthropocene began<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, I must confess that I dislike how most media discussion of the Anthropocene nowadays seems to overly focus on the search for the \u2018golden spike\u2019, which is actually beside the point for 99% of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of these things are true:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Humans are a geological force. The signs of this fact are everywhere we look, and we urgently need to grapple with it.<\/li><li>This is so recent from a geological perspective that the rock record is only just starting to register this fact.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d strongly argue that the first is much more important: the decisions we make now determine our planet&#8217;s geologic future. Yet all the focus is the pettifogging debate over the second, and the implication that the Anthropocene is not &#8216;real&#8217; unless and until everyone agrees on a single point where we can label it is really dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/2012\/06\/drawing-sharp-boundaries-in-a-fuzzy-world\/\">It&#8217;s hard to draw a boundary on a transition you&#8217;re in the middle of<\/a>. Cockroach geologists millions of years hence will have no trouble discerning the signal our civilisation is generating in rocks forming right now.
