{"id":10311,"date":"2022-09-14T13:57:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-14T18:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/?p=10311"},"modified":"2022-11-03T20:02:03","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T01:02:03","slug":"a-deep-origin-for-the-tohoku-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/highlyallochthonous\/2022\/09\/a-deep-origin-for-the-tohoku-earthquake\/","title":{"rendered":"A deep origin for the Tohoku earthquake?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eos.org\/research-spotlights\/months-of-gravity-changes-preceded-the-tohoku-earthquake\">So if I\u2019m reading this summary in Eos right<\/a>, there is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2022JB024542\">new study<\/a>&nbsp;suggesting that there was significant deformation of the subducted plate in the lead up to the M9 2011 Tohoku earthquake occurred &#8211; enough mass was redistributed to measurably change the local gravity field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a mechanical connection between the sinking\/subducting plate and the surface &#8211; that\u2019s what generates the \u2018slab pull\u2019 force that is one of the main drivers of plate tectonics.
