Brian recently showcased a cool image from Nasa’s Terra satellite, and here’s a couple more, courtesy of Nasa’s Earth Observatory. These false colour images are before and after shots of the area that has come to be occupied by the Lusi mud volcano, with the ‘after’ shot taken at the beginning of November, just after the AAPG debate that concluded that it was most likely triggered by nearby drilling.
Before (Aug 2004)
After (November 2008)
Compensation of the people displaced by the rising mud remains an issue, with talk of payments being delayed due to the global financial crisis (which seems to have started affecting certain exploration companies much earlier than the rest of the world economy), although the latest reports seem to suggest some sort of deal to get the money flowing to those who need it. Let’s hope so.
