{"id":334,"date":"2019-05-15T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T21:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/all-geo.org\/chris_rowan\/?p=334"},"modified":"2020-01-09T10:38:55","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T15:38:55","slug":"adventures-in-3d-printing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/all-geo.org\/chris_rowan\/2019\/05\/adventures-in-3d-printing\/","title":{"rendered":"Adventures in 3D printing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over the past few months I have been experimenting with possible educational uses of 3D printing<sup><a href=\"file:\/\/\/Applications\/iA%20Writer.app\/Contents\/Frameworks\/Kit.framework\/Versions\/A\/Resources\/Templates\/Copy%20Formatted.iatemplate\/Contents\/Resources\/#fn1-23989\">1<\/a><\/sup>, in two main areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Terrain models<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The online\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/touchterrain.geol.iastate.edu\/\">TouchTerrain<\/a>\u00a0tool makes it easy to generate .STL files of bits of the Earth&#8217;s surface, which can then be easily loaded into a slicing tool that turns it into instructions for the 3D printer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a number of ideas for creating&nbsp;<em>comparative models<\/em>, to give students a tangible idea of the relative scale of different geological features and events. Each model is ~5cm square.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m also investigating how terrain models might be used on field trips. On my Tectonics field trip across the Appalachians, I printed multiple copies of a terrain map that covered the whole region we were traversing. At each stop, we could locate ourselves and discuss how what we were seeing fit into the broader landscape, and see directly how, for example, the Blue Ridge differed from the Valley and Ridge. Plus, you can quickly iterate a part until it looks &#8211; and works &#8211; as envisaged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So far I&#8217;m pretty positive about the potential uses of 3D printing in both my teaching and research, but there are some caveats people thinking of pursuing similar projects should be aware of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Printing is slow. As an example, each of the Appalachian terrain models took four or five hours to print. If you are planning to produce a lot of educational models for a large class, you will need a lot of lead time.<\/li><li>Printing something in multiple colours is either expensive (buy a printer with a multi-filament print head) or much more complicated (design and print individual prints that fit together), although in some cases painting the models after printing is also an option.<\/li><li>If you are interested in designing your own things, rather than just finding items of interest on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/\">Thingiverse<\/a>, there is a steep learning curve. As a programmer, I have had a lot of success in using&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.openscad.org\/\">OpenSCAD<\/a>&nbsp;to print my sandbox parts, but the procedural approach has limitations for more complex or artistic projects, where something like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blender.org\/\">Blender<\/a>&nbsp;is probably more appropriate.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For those interested, these prints were produced on an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anycubic.com\/products\/anycubic-i3-mega\">Anycubic i3 Mega<\/a>, which is reasonably priced and has done pretty much everything I&#8217;ve asked of it without much fuss.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"file:\/\/\/Applications\/iA%20Writer.app\/Contents\/Frameworks\/Kit.framework\/Versions\/A\/Resources\/Templates\/Copy%20Formatted.iatemplate\/Contents\/Resources\/#fnr1-23989\">\u21a9\ufe0e<\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past few months I have been experimenting with possible educational uses of 3D printing1, in two main areas: Terrain models The online\u00a0TouchTerrain\u00a0tool makes it easy to generate .STL files of bits of the Earth&#8217;s surface, which can then be easily loaded into a slicing tool that turns it into instructions for the 3D printer.
